[Fredericksborg Castle, Copenhagen, Denmark] (LOC)
  1. thefishiologist says:
The spelling of a lot of these place names seems to be German. In Danish: Fredriksborg Slot
  2.

  3. Jesper Hauge says:
Actually it's now "Frederiksborg Slot, Hillerød, Denmark", but when the picture was taken, the spelling in this picture could very well have been correct.

I live just 1500 meters from here, and my grandfather used to work as a gardener in the park around the castle. He lived in a little house just outside the frame of this picture.

Frederiksborg Castle isn't situated in Copenhagen, but in Hillerød, approximately 35 km from the center of Copenhagen. It is now a museum where you can see a large collection of historic paintings.

  4.

  5. roger4336 says:
I was at Fredericksborg some years ago, and I found the museum very interesting. With each room, you advanced about 10 years in Danish history.

Of course you are correct, Jesper. It is Hillerød, not Copenhagen.

I have a later view of this photo. It will have to wait a few days, until I post the set on Flickr.

Correct, Seier. And I would have loved If the new Christiansborg Slot, where the parliament work today, had been a restoration of the old elegant architecture. Too bad that the old house burned out.

[Exchange hall, Copenhagen, Denmark] (LOC)
  1. …trialsanderrors says:
"Die Börse" translates as the "Stock Exchange" or "Børsen".

Børsen (The Stock Exchange) is a building on the island Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen built by Christian IV in 1619-1640.

The building was designed by Hans van Steenwinckel in the style of the Dutch renaissance architecture and is famous among tourists for its "dragonspire". The spire from 1625 is shaped as the tails of four dragons twined together. The tower measures 56 meters.

The building was restored by Nicolai Eigtved in 1745 and internally renovated in 1855. It housed the Danish stock-market until 1974. In 1918, unemployed anarchists attacked Børsen, an attack that went to the Danish history books as "stormen på Børsen" (the storm at the stock exchange). (from Wikipedia)

  5. Little Niels says:
Made world famous by Jules Verne in his novel Journey to the Earths Core, because he lets his group of adventures stay over in Copenhagen for a few days and while they wait they spend the time exercising their ability to stand hights by climbing this tower.

Pure myth, but a dramatic story:

The architecht threw himself from the tower when he found out that the twirl was against the clock and not, as he had drawn it, with the clock.

Some years ago it was still possible to walk all the way to the top of the tower. At the top the footpath is only wide enough for one shoe. The trip is amazing. Sadly someone jumped from there. I guess it is closed now, but I'm really not sure. I'll check the next time I'm in CPH.
